Museum der Stadt Lennestadt
Town museum in the Altes Amtshaus in Grevenbrück with the permanent exhibition "43/1 – Einheit in Vielfalt" (Unity in Diversity) on the history of Lennestadt – free admission.
About the museum
The initiative for a museum came from the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Grevenbrück (local heritage and tourism association). In 1993 the town of Lennestadt opened its museum in the so-called Altes Amtshaus (Old Office Building) on Kölner Straße, a building erected in 1910 that originally housed the Royal Prussian land registry office. On display were an exhibition on life in the Sauerland between 1850 and 1955, excavation finds from the medieval Peperburg, a historic classroom, and a weaving room; for a long time the town archive and the Landeskundliche Bibliothek (regional studies library) were also housed in the building.
Since 2014, the KulturBahnhof Grevenbrück has been part of the museum, where an exhibition on the Ruhr-Sieg line has been on view since 2020. After about 30 years, the Amtshaus no longer met current requirements structurally and conceptually. With state funding from the "Heimat-Zeugnis" program, it was renovated from 2020: an elevator and remodeled restrooms provide accessibility, a small extension offers a café room, and an open area with tiered seating for events was created behind the building. The archive, library, and storage moved in 2021 to the former elementary school in Elspe.
On May 26, 2024, the museum opened with the new permanent exhibition "43/1 – Einheit in Vielfalt", in which exhibition designers from Dortmund and many volunteers took part. Thematic islands lead from hill forts and the founding of the town through agriculture and industry to migration, club life, war, and faith; each of Lennestadt's 43 localities is to be represented with objects. The Peperburg finds, classroom, and weaving room were retained, and a room on the first floor is used for changing themes.
