About the museum

The Heimathaus stands in the historic center of Plettenberg directly beside the Christuskirche. The building at Kirchplatz 8 was rebuilt on its old site after the great town fire of April 1725 and afterward served for around two and a half centuries as a residential and commercial building. From 1973 the town first rented one room for exhibitions, and in 1975 it bought the whole house. The museum opened there on June 18, 1977; a renovation followed in 1999.

The museum is run by volunteers of the Heimatkreis Plettenberg, which also uses the house as its association headquarters, as an archive for its collection and publications, and as a venue for lectures. The permanent exhibition is spread over five rooms on the upper floor and the corridors. It first tells the history of the town and district of Plettenberg, among other things using two models built in 1997 of the town before the fire of 1725 and of Burg Schwarzenberg castle.

The focus is the industrialization of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: factory foundings, entrepreneurs and workers, products such as forks, tuning pins, and wire goods, child labor, patents, the Plettenberg narrow-gauge railway, and water power as an early energy source. Floor plans document the building of workers' housing, and industrial photographs from the 1990s bridge the gap to the present. A room on the Jewish history of the town is in preparation; another area is used for changing exhibitions.
