Automobile museum in the former Audi factory in Zwickau: more than 120 years of vehicle manufacturing from Horch, Audi, and Auto Union to Trabant and VW on 6,500 m².
Opening hoursAdmission from €15 Wheelchair accessible Restaurant
Marking the anniversary of the first series-produced German eight-cylinder automobile, presented in Berlin in 1926, the exhibition explores the technology and reputation of the Horch 8 series.
About the museum
The idea for a museum of Zwickau's automotive history dates back to the 1970s; a first exhibition was created in 1988. In December 2000, the City of Zwickau and AUDI AG jointly founded a nonprofit museum company in which each holds a 50 percent stake. After extensive conversion work, the August Horch Museum opened in September 2004 in the historic Audi factory where August Horch once had his cars built.
In 2005, the company founder's former residential villa on the factory grounds was added to the tour. With the expansion in November 2017 – incorporating a former production hall and the renovated administration building – the exhibition space grew to around 6,500 square meters, more than doubling in size.
The permanent exhibition leads chronologically from the beginnings around 1904 through the luxury cars of Horch and Audi, the founding of Auto Union and its Silver Arrow racing cars, to Trabant production in East Germany and the Volkswagen plant after 1990. Around 160 vehicles, reconstructed workshops, and historic belt-driven machinery show how Zwickau became a center of German automobile manufacturing.
