About the museum
The foundation was laid by Andreas Schwalbe, who bought discarded cars as early as the 1970s and made them roadworthy again; a Volga GAZ-24 has been in the family's possession since 1978. His sons Danny and Ringo grew up with the hobby. After the years of upheaval, when some cars still served as taxis or driving-school cars, collecting and restoring came back to the fore at the end of the 1990s. With the purchase of a former agricultural building complex in Culitzsch, space was gained for the rapidly growing stock of vehicles.
From 2004 the family worked on a museum of its own, and in 2009 it founded the association Historische Technik Culitzsch together with like-minded people. The classic car museum opened on 22 and 23 September 2018. All vehicles are roadworthy and are shown in staged scenes, such as a campsite, a complete Minol petrol station, a border installation or street scenes.
The collection mainly comprises vehicles that were on the road in the GDR: cars from the Volga to the Lada, Barkas vans and two-wheelers, plus trucks, tractors, fire-fighting equipment and military vehicles up to a tracked vehicle. In 2020 the association dismantled an NVA observation tower of type BT 9 near Spreenhagen and rebuilt it in Culitzsch as a lookout tower by 2022. Special exhibitions that change every year, a museum festival with a classic car meeting and rides in a Ural truck complement the offering.
