Audi in Le Mans – 24 Stunden am Limit

Special exhibition on Audi's campaigns at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, which the brand won thirteen times between 1999 and 2016.

About the museum

The AutoMuseum Volkswagen opened on April 25, 1985, when the company made its collection of historic vehicles publicly accessible for the first time. To this day it is housed in a former clothing factory on the eastern edge of Wolfsburg, just a few hundred meters from the main plant.

On January 1, 1992, the museum was transferred to the nonprofit foundation Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen. When the Autostadt and its multi-brand ZeitHaus opened in 2001, the museum changed course and has since focused exclusively on the Volkswagen brand.

About 130 vehicles are displayed across some 5,000 square meters, grouped into themes such as the Beetle family, the Bulli (VW bus), the larger air-cooled models, the Golf generations, prototypes and motorsport. Production cars and studies that were never built stand side by side, making it possible to trace lines of development. Curious one-offs include a wooden Beetle, a wicker Beetle, the movie car Herbie and an amphibious Golf with pontoons.

The collection is continually being expanded; changing special exhibitions, talks and club meetups in the museum parking lot complement the permanent exhibition. Volunteers help out in the workshop, the archive and at events.
