From July 2, 2026

Zum Geburtstag – 100 Jahre Carl H. Hahn

With photos, documents, memorabilia and interview excerpts, the ZeitHaus pays tribute to the former Volkswagen CEO and, in a second part, invites visitors to reflect on the future of mobility.

About the museum

In the mid-1990s, then Volkswagen CEO Ferdinand Piëch came up with the idea of presenting the group and all its brands in a contemporary way to factory visitors and customers picking up new cars. The Autostadt was built for this purpose as a decentralized project of Expo 2000 on a site along the Mittellandkanal right next to the main Wolfsburg plant; the overall planning was by HENN Architekten, and the landscape was designed by Hinnerk Wehberg. After its official opening on May 31, 2000, it has been open to the public since June 1, 2000.

Spread across a park and lagoon landscape of around 28 hectares are the Konzernforum (group forum) with its piazza and family area, pavilions of individual group brands, the customer center and two 48-meter-high glass car towers. The Autostadt is considered one of the largest new-car delivery centers in the world; by 2025 almost 3.5 million vehicles had been handed over to customers here. The grounds also include a luxury hotel.

The museum core is the multi-brand automobile museum ZeitHaus. Drawing on a collection of more than 260 vehicles from over 60 different brands, it tells the more than 130-year history of the automobile – from its carriage-like beginnings to the present. More than 50 milestones are staged in a glazed rack, and design icons are presented on platforms; the wall design is by the artist Peter Kogler. Because many vehicles take part in rallies and drives, the exhibits change regularly.

By its 25th anniversary in 2025, the Autostadt had welcomed more than 48 million visitors. Besides the exhibitions, summer and winter events, driving experiences and a certified educational program shape what it offers; new exhibition areas are currently being created in the Konzernforum.
