Bahnhof Kleinkummerfeld
Disused station of 1875 near Neumünster, now a railway museum with a mechanical signal box, ticket office, field railway, and vehicles.
About the museum
Kleinkummerfeld station went into operation on December 10, 1875, together with the railway line from Neumünster to Bad Oldesloe. After passenger service between Neumünster and Bad Segeberg ended in September 1984 and freight service was also gradually given up by 1990, the station remained closed; when the section was later reactivated for passenger trains, Kleinkummerfeld no longer got a stop.
In February 1985, twelve railway enthusiasts in Neumünster founded the association Eisenbahnfreunde Mittelholstein, which wanted to preserve historic vehicles and railway facilities and show them to the public. After a first home at Innien station, the association bought the station building together with the land and outbuildings from the Deutsche Bundesbahn on December 1, 1986. A fire in the night of February 8, 1990, destroyed two thirds of the building and many exhibits; the members rebuilt it over about five years, mostly with their own labor.
In 1998 the platform track was rebuilt; on a neighboring plot of about 7,000 square meters bought in 1999, further standard-gauge tracks were built by 2005 and a 600-millimeter field railway from 2009. Since 2008 the association has had its own parking lot with access road. The museum shows railway operations of the 20th century: the functioning lever signal box installed in 1931, a ticket office, uniforms, model railway layouts, as well as locomotives and an inspection railcar.
