About the museum

The museum "Tor zur Urzeit" (Gateway to Prehistory) is run by the association of the same name, founded on May 5, 2010. The museum director and chairman is the geologist Dr. Gerald Kopp. Its aim is to convey knowledge of the history of the Earth and of life, with a special focus on Schleswig-Holstein, which would not exist in its present form without the Ice Ages.

The exhibition runs from the Paleozoic through the Mesozoic to the Cenozoic. A life-size Tyrannosaurus rex and other dinosaurs represent the prehistoric age, alongside mammoth and cave bear skeletons, a reindeer hunters' camp, and topics such as the causes of the Ice Age, climate change, mineral resources and energy production. Fossils serve as evidence of evolution and are linked with mythical creatures such as the unicorn, dragon and sea serpent.

Life scenes, information boards and hands-on stations make the content tangible. The house offers guided tours, educational programs, excursions, lectures and children's birthday parties, and publishes its own books.
