Baierwein-Museum
Small viticulture museum in the medieval press house of Bach an der Donau with a tree press of 1615, museum vineyard, and wine educational trail.
About the museum
The Baierwein-Museum is devoted to winegrowing in Old Bavaria, especially the Baierwein grown along the Danube between Kelheim and Wörth. It opened in 1998 in the historic Biethaus – the press house – of Bach an der Donau, whose origins go back to the 14th century. The centerpiece is a tree press from 1615, one of the oldest surviving wine presses in Germany and the only one remaining of the once numerous Biethäuser of the region.
In May 2008 an extension was added, and the outdoor grounds were redesigned. On display are tools for work in the vineyard and plant protection as well as winemaking equipment such as the grape mill, screw press, and wine filter. A newly designed multimedia room presents, among other things, a bronze figure of Bacchus about 2,000 years old, found in the Kelheim area.
The municipality of Bach an der Donau is the sponsor; operations are handled on a volunteer basis by the Förderverein Baierwein-Museum with over 300 members. It manages the museum vineyard and the wine educational trail, makes its own museum wine, offers hands-on courses in the vineyard, and publishes a series of writings on the history of winegrowing in Old Bavaria.
