Half-timbered farmhouse from 1806 next to the moated castle Haus Kemnade, with an exhibition on rural life and a bee museum – free admission, May to October.
Vivid Low German sayings and farmers' weather lore, illustrated with diagrams and small model scenes, introduce everyday life on a Stiepel farm around 1807.
About the museum
The Bauernhausmuseum (Farmhouse Museum) is part of the museum ensemble at the moated castle Haus Kemnade. Although it lies within Hattingen, it is run, like the castle, by the City of Bochum, which acquired Haus Kemnade in 1921.
The building comes from the farm of the Schulte zur Oven family in Stiepel, one of the largest farms in the village. For centuries the farming family worked the farm as a hereditary fief of the lords of Kemnade, owing them dues and services. In 1806 Johann Heinrich Schulte zur Oven – thanks to additional income from mining shares – was able to buy the farm and had a new half-timbered house built: a Low German hall house in which people, livestock, supplies and workshop were all under one roof.
In 1971 the house was carefully dismantled in Stiepel and rebuilt behind Haus Kemnade; it opened as a museum in June 1972. The furnishings are no longer the farm's original inventory but were assembled in the 1970s from purchases and donations: farm tools and furniture from Westphalia and the Bergisches Land. On the upper floor, the beekeepers' association has set up a bee museum with a living colony whose bees fly in and out through a window. Changing exhibitions and festivals such as the harvest festival round out the program. The farmhouse came through the 2021 flood undamaged.
