About the museum
The building on Pfarrer-Mesle-Weg was dated to around 1700 by timber analysis and passed to the Catholic church administration by exchange around 1820. When a new parsonage was built next to it around 1830, the house was shortened to 22 meters. Until the commutation of the tithe in kind around 1850 it served as a tithe barn; afterwards larger farmers rented it to store harvests and equipment. A demolition, already decided in 1970, was prevented by the state monument authority and a local citizens' initiative.
From 1973 the Schwenninger Heimatverein also campaigned for a farm museum, which opened on May 10, 1975. Since 2012 the Freundeskreis Dorf Mühlhausen e. V. (Friends of Mühlhausen Village association) has run the house.
On the first floor, the stable and barn are still recognizable; historic draft harness hangs in the former horse stable. The displays range from field tools, vehicles, harvesting and threshing equipment to baking utensils, flax processing, rope-making and dairy processing, as well as a cobbler's workshop, a village schoolroom from around 1900, a sheepfold, the farmhand's chamber and a bridal wagon. Behind the house are a pump well and a cottage garden with a bee station from around 1900. The "Wettebuurschopf", a shed in Alemannic plank construction built around 1680 in Schwenningen, was reassembled here in 1979 and shows threshing from the time before combine harvesters.
