About the museum

The Baumhaus at the old Hanseatic harbor was built in 1773/74 as the third building on this site. It was the harbor station of the Baumschließer (tree gatekeeper): he collected tolls and opened or closed the harbor entrance with a large tree trunk. The harbor office remained in the house until 1947; afterwards it was used as a residence.

Since September 28, 1973, the building has housed a private museum. Hans-Jürgen Berg, who lives on the upper floor and largely renovated the dilapidated house himself, set it up on the ground floor. He was supported by the Förderkreis Alt Stade (Old Stade friends' circle).

The museum shows Berg's private collection of "Stadensien" (Stade memorabilia) from several centuries: everyday objects such as beer and milk bottles, company signs, postcards, photos, books, maps, clothing and sewing kits, club pennants and military items. The museum is currently closed until further notice.
