About the museum
In 1952, the Stade district took on the sponsorship (Patenschaft) for the East Prussian district of Goldap, which existed from 1818 to 1945. After war and expulsion, many people from the Goldap district had found a new home in the Stade area. The Patenschaftsmuseum (sponsorship museum) keeps the memory of the former homeland alive and is also a meeting place for expellees, their descendants and guests from today's Polish town of Goldap.
The museum is run by the Stade district and the Kreisgemeinschaft Goldap Ostpreußen e.V. (registered association of the Goldap district community); volunteer members look after the house on Harsefelder Straße. The collection covers around 400 years of regional history as well as the cultural and social life of the Goldap district until 1945.
Key themes include an information room on East Prussia, the history of churches and schools, rural life, the Rominter Heide (Rominten Heath), the fate of the population in 1944–45, and the postwar period, from flight through first visits to the old homeland to youth exchanges. An expanded exhibition documents the relations between Goldap and Stade up to Poland's accession to the EU. Eyewitness accounts are shown as videos, and an open-shelf library offers literature on East Prussia and genealogy.
