About the museum
The Provinzialmuseum, built in 1904, is the only building in the Elbe-Weser triangle that was deliberately planned as a museum from the outset, and is among the oldest museum buildings in Germany. It was intended to make the collections of the Association for History and Antiquities of the former duchies of Bremen and Verden and of the Land Hadeln accessible to citizens and schools. A large coat-of-arms window above the staircase commemorates the project's supporters.
The folklore exhibition was divided into rural and bourgeois culture. On view were a significant collection of Altes Land costumes and farm implements, as well as an urban living room of the 18th/19th century with a rare landscape wallpaper of 1825 and a memorial room for August von Goeben.
The building is not open to the public today. The history of the building and the rescue of its collection have been examined since June 2024 in an exhibition in the Schwedenspeicher. The Heimatmuseum is part of the Museen Stade.
