About the museum
The Bergbau- und Heimatmuseum was founded in 1984, shortly after the opening of the Protestant Paulushof senior care center in Essen-Heisingen, on the initiative of then pastor Werner Hamacher. It is meant to keep alive the memory of the Carl Funke colliery, closed in 1973, and of the people who worked there. Former colliery officials donated exhibits at an early stage, which gave the small house its personal character. The museum circle, with around 35 volunteers, has expanded and looks after the exhibition ever since.
The mining section uses pictures, display boards, models and a film to show the history of mining in Heisingen, from coal pits and the first adits in the 16th century to modern deep mining. It also explains how coal forms and how its age is determined, and describes the history of the Essener Steinkohlenbergwerke AG. Old charters, site plans, kux certificates (mining shares) and many work tools are also on display.
The local history section on the garden level is devoted to village history: from the first documents around the year 800, through its affiliation with the Werden Abbey and the 23 farms that shaped the village until the secularization in 1803, to Heisingen's development into a popular residential and recreation area on the Ruhr and Lake Baldeney. Historical photos and 19th-century writings document the village's transformation.
