Rotkreuz-Museum Essen
Museum of the DRK Essen district association on the history of the Red Cross in Essen with rescue equipment, medical technology, flags, and decorations.
About the museum
The impetus for the museum came from a chronicle of Red Cross work in Essen since 1889, which the DRK district association commissioned in the late 1960s. Over decades, volunteers collected objects, documents, and mementos from the association's divisions. On August 14, 1990, this became a museum of its own, the Red Cross Museum – archival and exhibition work of a kind that only a few district associations undertake.
On around 200 square meters, the permanent exhibition shows how the rescue services, medical service, and organization of the Red Cross in Essen developed. On display are stretchers and oxygen equipment, medical and radio equipment, a medical tent with treatment equipment, and a complete telecommunications center from the 1950s. Display cases present medals, decorations, pins, flags, certificates, books, and photos.
Most of the pieces are closely tied to the city of Essen. They tell of the work of the formerly independent DRK units in the individual districts and thus also a piece of Essen local history. The museum belongs to the Association of German Red Cross Museums (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der deutschen Rotkreuz-Museen).
