About the museum
Mining in Lautenthal goes back to the early 13th century. Silver ore finds brought a period of prosperity in the 16th century, which the mine name "Lautenthals Glück" (Lautenthal's Luck) also reflects. Active mining lasted, with many ups and downs, until 1931; until the end of 1957 exploratory and research mining was maintained, but it did not lead to a resumption.
Work on the mine for the mining museum began in 1974/75. Special care was taken to preserve the historic installations and to restore the original adit. Today the museum is run by Bergbaumuseum Lautenthals Glück gGmbH.
Visitors ride the mine train into the Tiefer Sachsenstollen, walk through the silver mine with a mine guide, and on the ore boat trip travel about 110 meters by ore boat through a historic drainage adit. Above ground, the shaft house with its Dörrell Fahrkunst (man-riding apparatus), the rotunda, the silver and smithy hall, and the outdoor area show geological exhibits, mining models and historic machines.
