About the museum
Hahnenklee-Bockswiese developed into a climatic health resort (Luftkurort) in the 19th century. The Harzklub branch Hahnenklee-Bockswiese initially ran a Heimatstube in the Kurhaus; since May 22, 2016, it has been the Heimatmuseum at Rathausstraße 12, in the middle of the pedestrian zone.
The exhibition tells of life in the spa town and of Upper Harz mining, whose beginnings reach back to the 16th century. It also covers forestry and water management, household life, costumes, and Harz minerals. True-to-life models show the spa town, a water wheel, and a Striegelhaus; many old photographs document winter fun and the international bobsled races. The house is divided into four “Orte der Tradition” (places of tradition): mining, tourism, winter sports, and Paul Lincke.
The composer Paul Lincke (“Berliner Luft”) lived briefly in Hahnenklee and was buried in the Hahnenklee cemetery in 1946. Personal belongings of his form the “Paul-Lincke-Ecke” (Paul Lincke corner). The museum team also organizes lectures, readings, music evenings, and a storytelling café (Erzählcafé).
