About the museum
As early as the 1950s, Langelsheim considered a municipal local history museum, but suitable rooms were lacking. Only when the secondary school (Realschule) moved into the new school center did the half-timbered house on Mühlenstraße, built in 1870 as a boys' school, become free. The town council decided in September 1977 to convert it into a museum.
The opening took place in stages: on June 2, 1979, the entire ground floor opened; in 1980 the first rooms on the upper floor followed; in 1981 the craftsmen's wing. The annex became the forge, and a half-timbered extension became the barn with a grain loft. With the museum barn the ensemble was complete in 1986; a sawmill was added in 1997/98.
Today the museum shows local and regional history, from carting in the Harz foothills and the Kanstein castle to a historical school class, the printing works, a laundry, a living kitchen with an open hearth and agricultural equipment. The town of Langelsheim is the sponsor; volunteers take over supervision, supported by a friends' association founded in 2018. In the Bürgerstube (citizens' room) on the upper floor, civil marriage ceremonies can take place.
