About the museum
The mining museum opened in November 1995 on the upper floor of the village community hall, the former school of Niedermoschel. The local municipality provided the rooms; the idea and a large part of the collection came from teacher Ernst Spangenberger, who had studied the mining history of the North Palatinate since his youth. The museum also aims to commemorate the miners of the last period of mining.
For more than 500 years, mercury was mined around the Moschellandsberg, along with silver and coal. The museum presents this history with display panels, dioramas and three-dimensional models, with a focus on the mines on the Landsberg and on the technical development of mining and smelting. On display are minerals and fossils, including bright red cinnabar ore, as well as miners' tools, some from the 18th and 19th centuries, photographs and plans.
Special features include a colored plaster cast of a scratch drawing dating from around 1781 from the Elkersberg experimental mine, showing a shaft winch (Schachthaspel). Children can get hands-on in a play mine, and video films explain mining and the recovery of fossils. A thematically arranged photo collection also documents village life from around 1900 to the present. For school classes there are free, age-appropriate worksheets on request.
