About the museum

The Alsenzer Museum für Heimatgeschichte opened in 1977 in the Old Town Hall, a half-timbered building from the 16th century on Rathausplatz. A year later the Nordpfalzgalerie was added in the same building; it still shows changing exhibitions and presents around 50 well-known personalities from the Nordpfalz (North Palatinate). The municipality runs the Alsenz museums, which are looked after by the Historischer Verein der Nordpfalz Alsenz (Historical Society of the North Palatinate, Alsenz).

The collection ranges from finds from Roman times through the Middle Ages and early modern period to the 19th and 20th centuries. On display are a folk-life collection, a carpenter's workshop, Palatinate coins and emergency money (Notgeld), maps, hand-drawn cadastral maps of the 18th century, and flags. The open-air court loggia (Gerichtslaube) and a historic scissor pillory on the building recall the village's former jurisdiction.

From the mid-19th to the early 20th century, Alsenz was a center of stonemasonry; this theme is covered by the separate Pfälzisches Steinhauermuseum (Palatinate Stonemason Museum) on the market square.
