About the museum
The Samson mine is a mine more than 500 years old in St. Andreasberg and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Harz. It shows historic Upper Harz ore mining and its energy supply through water power. Original technology such as waterwheels and the Fahrkunst, a rod system for lowering and raising miners, can still be seen today. The site is run by Barsch und Schärf GbR.
The mine tour lasts about 60 minutes and ends in the adjoining mining museum. The museum gives insights into historical mining, ore processing, and the working and living conditions of miners and their families in the "Bergstaat" (mining community). Particularly valuable are models more than 100 years old that illustrate how the technical installations worked.
In 2020 the museum was renovated, technically upgraded and reconceived in content. New bilingual analog and digital models explain mining and water management interactively; a Fahrkunst simulation lets guests experience the descent, for which the shaft was scanned in 3D. Minerals from the famous "Schatzkästchen" (treasure chest) of St. Andreasberg complete the display.
