About the museum
The local history museum was founded in 1969 from the work of the Archivgemeinschaft Bad Lauterberg (archive association). In 1985 the rooms were expanded, modernized and fitted with new display cases, with support from the town, the state of Lower Saxony, the Werner-Brune-Stiftung (foundation) and the Volksbank.
The tour follows the local history: it begins with finds, documents and inscription boards on early history, on Lutterberg Castle from the 12th century, and on the counts of Scharzfels and Lutterberg, including the founding of the village. The “Bad Lauterberger Stube” (parlor) shows 19th-century living culture, along with clothing and uniforms from that period. Further sections are devoted to hunting and forest use, the typical crafts of the region, above all mining, and the development of the town. A separate Ritscher room with original furniture and pictures recalls the founder of the spa.
A permanent exhibition is dedicated to expellees and other victims of war and tyranny. The tour ends with a natural history collection featuring numerous birds and butterflies.
