About the museum
The German Diabetes Museum goes back to the suggestion of children with diabetes and their parents, who wanted to know how people with the condition were treated in the past. A dedicated museum association maintains the collection. It was first shown in Bad Bevensen, where it presented several hundred exhibits on the history of the disease, the development of insulin, and syringes, pens, pumps, and measuring devices.
After the exhibition was not regularly accessible for several years, it found a new home at the Bad Lauterberg diabetes center in 2010. Since then, the display cases have stood in the winter garden of the specialist clinic, so that not only patients but also other interested people can view the objects. By arrangement, a personal guided tour is available, with clinic staff providing support.
The display features historical documents, devices, and medical aids from more than a century. They show how diabetes was discovered, researched, and treated, from early insulin syringes to modern therapies. The collection is continuously expanded and complements the clinic's training and continuing education courses. The clinic is run by a non-profit foundation for diabetes therapy.
