About the museum

At the foot of the Hainberg near Trusetal, on which the Wallenburg was built in the 13th century to protect the ore mines, iron ore had been mined since 1709. In the 19th century three mines on fluorspar and barite were established on the southwest slope; they were shut down after an economic crisis around 1886. Around 1900 the entrepreneur Hugo Endter, who ran a barite mill in the village, acquired the mining rights and developed the Hühn mine, today’s show mine.

From 1953 the VEB Schachtbau Nordhausen explored the deposit, and in 1954 the mine became state-owned. In the following years a blind shaft with levels at 35, 80 and 128 metres depth was sunk, and the district belonged to changing GDR combines of spar and ore mining. After reunification, Trusetal mining was no longer competitive: in August 1990 production at the Hühn ended, and by 1991 the other mines closed as well; around 700 people lost their jobs.

The mining and local heritage association founded after reunification wanted to preserve the mine as a show mine. After parts of the facilities had been placed under heritage protection and the municipality had acquired the site in 1995, the show mine opened on 12 May 1996. Because the mine was in full operation until 1990, visitors here can experience functioning mining technology up close. Since 1998 the municipal tourism company has operated the mine; the association supports it and holds the traditional Mettenschicht every year on 30 December.
