About the museum
In the Schmalkalden area, iron had been extracted since the 16th century and processed in smelters, hammer mills and grinding workshops. The “Finstertal” iron and manganese ore mine in the district of Asbach, by contrast, was only established in 1858 and produced iron and manganese ore until its closure in 1934.
In 1959 the mine was made accessible again as a teaching and show mine. It is considered the only surviving mine of this kind from around 1900 in the southern Thuringian region. Today the Schloss Wilhelmsburg Museum looks after the show mine.
On the tour through the roughly 350 metres of developed mine workings, visitors see geological outcrops, miners’ tools and equipment, and fluorescent minerals; sound effects complement the tour.
