About the museum
In the mid-1990s, the idea arose in Fulda to preserve the history of the American troops stationed there and of German-American relations; the museum was officially founded in 1995. It is run by a volunteer association that is a member of the Hessian Museum Association.
The museum is located in the Galerie district on the grounds of the former Sickels Army Airfield, of which the tower and flight operations building survive. The exhibition on the upper floor of a building at the Westfriedhof covers around 400 square metres.
In themed rooms, the museum tells the story from the Constabulary after 1945 through the 14th Cavalry Regiment to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment "Blackhorse", which was stationed at the "Fulda Gap" until 1993/94. There are also rooms on the US Army in Europe, on the everyday life of soldiers' families and on friendship with the local population. The collection has grown to over 2,000 objects, many of them donations from contemporary witnesses.
