The Kinder-Akademie Fulda is considered the first independent children's museum in Germany. It was founded on the private initiative of Helen and Prof. Dr. Tassilo Bonzel, who led it on a voluntary basis for around 30 years. In 2020 Helen Bonzel handed the institution over to the city of Fulda; today it is run as a non-profit GmbH, supported by the city, the district and the state of Hesse.
The house sees itself as a social cultural venue where children and young people aged roughly 6 to 14 come into contact with art, culture, natural sciences and technology. It is divided into a museum area and an academy area.
In the museum, interactive objects on roughly 2,000 square meters invite visitors to try things out, including the wooden machines of the French artist Pierre Andrès. From the start, the central exhibit has been the five-meter-high walk-through heart, which makes knowledge of the body tangible. One or two special exhibitions a year supplement the permanent offerings. The academy offers an art school, workshops during school holidays and competitions such as "Jugend malt".
