Blumberger Mühle
NABU nature discovery center in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve with a hands-on exhibition on moorland and beech forest and 14 hectares of outdoor grounds.
About the museum
The nature discovery center opened in April 1997 after about two years of construction as the central information point of the UNESCO Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve; it is run by the Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU, Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union). The place inherited its name from a water mill on the Welse river, which the miller Martin Blumberg operated around 1700 as a grain and sawmill. Today only its foundation walls remain between the Blumberg ponds.
The architect Bernd Kühn designed the main building as a walk-in hollow tree stump – a symbol of the cycle of growth and decay in nature. A massive boulder, placed on the foundation slab before the superstructure was built and which would no longer fit out through any door, recalls in the exhibition the Ice Age shaping of the Uckermark.
The indoor exhibition is devoted to the region's moors and beech forests, including the Grumsin Forest, which has been a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 2011; the moor exhibition was revised together with the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development. Outdoors there is a 14-hectare nature discovery landscape with a moor boardwalk, orchard meadow, nature garden, playground, and an observation tower over the Blumberg ponds, as well as a display facility for European pond turtles and a herd of Skudde sheep. Environmental education for daycare centers and schools, guided hikes, and an organic restaurant round out the offering.
