About the museum
The Bochumer Krippenmuseum is the private collection of nativity scene artist Manfred Lipienski and his wife Rosemarie, who work closely with the Erster Bochumer Krippenverein. Over many years they have gathered Christmas nativity scenes from around the world and added works of their own.
The museum displays more than 250 nativity scenes from over 55 countries, some collected internationally and some built by hand. These include a mining-themed nativity panorama that sets the birth of Christ in a wintry Ruhr landscape near Dahlhausen, complete with a colliery, a railway line and a winding tower. Each year the museum opens for a nativity exhibition, which can be visited after registering by telephone or in writing. Lipienski also offers a “virtual nativity museum”: using a projector and storytelling, he presents extraordinary nativity scenes in retirement homes and schools.
