About the museum

The Eppendorfer Heimatverein was founded in 1988 with the aim of building a museum of its own. To this end it had original half-timbered buildings dismantled at other locations and rebuilt in Eppendorf; most of the work was done by members volunteering their own labor. The Bochum city council approved the project in 1997; the foundation stone for the barn on Engelsburger Straße was laid on June 6, 1998, and the topping-out ceremony followed that October. The second construction phase reached its topping-out in July 2002.

The name "Thorpe" goes back to the old name Abbingthorpe for Eppendorf and means village. On display are mainly farm tools and furnished living and work rooms such as a bedroom, a sewing and ironing room, a utility kitchen, and the maids' and farmhands' room. In the barn loft there is a nesting site for barn owls. The courtyard and barn also serve as a venue for events, such as theater performances by the association's groups, cultural evenings, an Easter bonfire and the Christmas market. The grounds include a cottage garden and a traditional orchard meadow, which the association maintains.
