About the museum

On the occasion of the town's 600th anniversary in 1892, citizens of Celle founded a museum association, which first moved into a temporary building on Bergstraße and ran the museum as the “Vaterländisches Museum” (Patriotic Museum). From 1898, the manufacturer Wilhelm Bomann shaped its work as chairman: he focused the collection on rural culture, town history, and Hanoverian military history and raised funds for a prestigious new building opposite the palace, which opened in 1907. The museum has borne his name since 1923.

During the Nazi era, the museum conformed to the ruling ideology; the collections survived the war largely unscathed. Since 1938, the City of Celle has been the main operator alongside the association. After the war, the pewter, silver, and painting holdings grew, and from 1979 industrial history, a storage facility with restoration workshops, and a textile display were added. In 1993, an annex was completed, which is also used by the Kunstmuseum (art museum) established at that time.

Since 2006, the Residenzmuseum in Celle Palace has been a separately presented department of the Bomann-Museum. From 2010 to 2013, the permanent exhibition was completely redesigned: since then, six tours have led through urban and regional history, through the Low German hall house built inside the museum, through middle-class domestic culture, the world of work and industry, through the “discovery” of the Lüneburg Heath, and through stories of migration in the Celle region. Another focus is European portrait miniatures from the Tansey Miniatures Foundation. Stefan Daberkow has directed the museum since September 2021.
