Marienwerder-Zimmer im Alten Rathaus

Local heritage collection of the sponsor city of Celle on the town and district of Marienwerder in West Prussia, in two rooms of the Old Town Hall.

About the museum

In 1953 the city of Celle took on sponsorship of the expellees from the town and district of Marienwerder in West Prussia, and has since supported the gathering of mementos, documents and estates. At first, two side rooms of the city archive were enough; in 1965 the "Erinnerungszentrum für Marienwerder" (Marienwerder Memorial Center) moved into larger rooms on Kalandgasse. Later came stations at Heiliges Kreuz and in the Roß'sche Villa on Magnusstraße. In 2011 the exhibition was revised, and since then it also refers to the twin-town partnership with the Polish town of Kwidzyn, which is what Marienwerder is called today; the partnership was closed in 1992.

Today the Marienwerder Room occupies two rooms on the second floor of the Old Town Hall on the market square, the former anterooms of the Lord Mayor. It is looked after by the Celle City Archive, and the exhibits belong to the city.

The collection includes large models of important brick buildings of the region, among them a model of the town of Marienwerder carved from cork, as well as copies of charters, maps such as a map of Prussia by Mercator, historical photographs, a reprint of the Radziwiłł Bible, and mementos such as those of the 1861 Turnverein (gymnastics club). A large part of the holdings is stored in the depot of the city archive.
