Celler Garnison-Museum
Association-run museum on the history of the military stationed in Celle from 1866 to today – with British uniforms and communications technology.
About the museum
The Celler Garnison-Museum goes back to the non-profit association of the same name, which has been collecting objects on Celle's military and city history since the early 1980s. Over three decades the members gathered an extensive collection and received numerous loans.
In 1999 the museum moved into its present building on Hafenstraße; since then the city of Celle has been responsible for its permanent preservation, while volunteers of the association ensure opening hours and tours. The house is part of the Celler Museen and is coordinated in content with the Bomann-Museum, which covers the Hanoverian period.
The permanent exhibition begins with the Prussian annexation of Hanover in 1866 and extends via the Empire, the Weimar Republic, and the Nazi era to the Bundeswehr and the British garrison, which left Celle in 2012. More than 1,000 objects – uniforms, flags, certificates, sabers, silverware, and photographs – also tell the life stories of individual soldiers. Of special note are the large collection of British uniforms and memorabilia as well as a special collection of military communications and signals equipment from the Empire to the present.
