About the museum

As more and more narrow-gauge and private railway lines in the Uckermark lost importance after 1990, the idea arose of turning the Gramzow station grounds into a railway museum. In 1992 the municipality of Gramzow, the city of Prenzlau, and the then district formed a municipal special-purpose association as the operator; today it includes the municipalities of the Amt Gramzow.

The association bought the engine shed and goods shed from the Reichsbahn and had them restored with state funds. In 1994/95 a used turntable was installed so that the engine shed is connected to the track network again. Vehicles and exhibits came from, among others, the Reichsbahn, the refinery in Schwedt, and a private collection of narrow-gauge railways. The museum opened on June 1, 1996.

In the following years, a narrow-gauge layout, the track construction exhibition in the equipment shed, and the main exhibition on the history of narrow-gauge and private railways in the goods shed were added. Around 2000 the association also took over the station building and the facilities along the line to Damme, on which the Gramzow heritage railway now runs special trains. Since 2015, a field railway layout with 600 mm gauge has also been growing.

On more than 7,000 m², the museum shows vehicle technology, workshop practice, and track construction with steam, diesel, and electric vehicles.
