About the museum
The museum is located on the grounds of Penkun Castle, one of the last surviving castle complexes of the Pomeranian dukes. The fortress is first mentioned around 1190; in the 13th century it was a ducal border stronghold. The present castle was built between 1484 and 1486 and received its Renaissance appearance between 1580 and 1590.
After 1945 the castle was used, among other things, as a school with boarding facilities and as an agricultural training center; by the end of the 1980s it was dilapidated. Committed citizens, the town and, from 1991 to 2001, the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz (German Foundation for Monument Protection) saved it from decay.
The museum itself opened on May 18, 2008 in the restored steward’s house of the castle complex and is run by the museum association of the town of Penkun. On the ground floor, it shows a border and customs museum on the border between the GDR and Poland, alongside exhibitions on the prehistory and early history of the town. On the upper floor, changing exhibitions present works by painters, photographers or collectors from the area. The castle cellar also houses a small exhibition on the judicial system in Pomerania.
