About the museum

In the early 16th century, Torgau was one of the most important beer towns in Saxony. Around 285 properties in the town held brewing rights, and Torgau beer was delivered mainly to Leipzig and Halle; Martin Luther also appreciated it. The property at Fischerstraße 11 was one of these brewing estates.

In the second half of the 16th century, the district official Wolff Giersing had the residential building converted and a large brewing and malting house built. The brewing estate was allowed to produce eleven brews a year, around 37,000 litres of beer. Preserved are the medieval brewing cellars, blackened by the town fire of 1482, the sandstone vaults of the brewhouse from around 1565 and the original brewing hall; the building has three full storeys and three roof storeys.

As part of the Torgau Museum Trail, the house is looked after by the Museum of Urban and Cultural History. In the taproom, Torgau's brewing history is explained; the brewing hall and cellars can be experienced during tours, beer tastings and events.
