About the museum
The three-story Renaissance house on the Scharfenberg, today Katharinenstraße 11, was built in 1528, incorporating older building fabric; two basement levels survive intact. From 1517 it belonged to the electoral Rennmeister Christof Ahoymet.
Katharina von Bora had fled the Nimbschen convent in 1523 with eight other nuns, and with the help of the Torgau merchant Leonard Köppe she reached Torgau. In 1552 the plague broke out in Wittenberg, the university moved to Torgau, and Katharina followed it. On the way she was badly injured in a carriage accident and was cared for in the house of the widow Karsdorf by the medical professor Jakob Millich. There she died on December 20, 1552; she was buried in the Marienkirche, where the gravestone donated by her sons can still be seen.
The Katharina-Luther-Stube is regarded as the only museum, albeit a small one, dedicated to the "tatkräftige Lutherin" (energetic Luther woman). It belongs to the Torgau Museum Trail of the Stadt- und Kulturgeschichtliche Museum and was extensively redesigned in early 2017.
