The Upper Lusatian artist Michael Voigt creates portraits, landscapes and animal motifs from buttons; alongside, his large button collection from the Middle Ages to the present is shown. Closing event on 1 November 2026.
Mayor Paul Ringenhain had the house at Breite Straße 9 newly built in 1596. As the wealthiest citizen of Torgau at the time and a merchant in beer and cloth with connections to Leipzig, Halle and the court at Hartenfels Castle, he sought the best craftsmen for his residential and commercial house and tried to emulate the interior of the castle.
The wall and ceiling paintings follow models from the castle that have long since been lost there. The wooden coffered ceiling of the Saalstube (parlor) on the first upper floor shows 40 angels in clouds and stars, with musical instruments and the instruments of Christ's Passion, and is attributed to court painter Nicolaus Rossmann. The panel ceiling of the hall on the second upper floor, with animal depictions after Hans Vredeman de Vries, goes back to Peter de Bruck. The door painting of the Saalstube shows the four elements after engravings by Karel van Mander, and in a room of the side wing there is a courtly hunting frieze with life-size guards.
In this completeness and state of preservation, the house is considered a unique example of a bourgeois residence in Saxony, one that vividly illustrates the "power and splendor" of the time around 1600. It belongs to the Torgau Museum Trail.
