About the museum

The long house with a mansard roof in Winkel was built in 1751 by the Ackermann family of Bingen. In 1804 the brothers Franz and Georg Brentano, half-brothers of the poets Clemens and Bettine, acquired the estate with its walled garden. From 1806 they used it as a summer residence; later it became the year-round home of Franz Brentano and his family.

The house became a meeting place of the Rhine Romantic movement. Its guests included Achim von Arnim, the Brothers Grimm, Freiherr vom Stein and Goethe, who spent eight days here in 1814 and lived in the two rooms on the upper floor. These rooms have kept their atmosphere for more than 200 years and give an impression of the domestic culture of the period.

The estate remained in the family's possession until 2014. Then the State of Hesse acquired the Brentanohaus together with its garden. A sponsoring company formed by the Town of Oestrich-Winkel and the Freies Deutsches Hochstift is to preserve the house as a place of German Romanticism and make it accessible to the public. Visits take place on open guided tours and by arrangement.
