About the museum
The late Gothic Graulturm is the only surviving remnant of the town wall of Gau-Algesheim, built around 1350. After the fortifications were demolished from 1812 onward, it remained standing as a cantonal prison, later passed into private hands and was placed under heritage protection in 1910. In 1966 the town acquired it, and from 1986 it was restored to house the municipal museum.
The tower is now permanently closed. The museum objects were moved into the town museum "Raum der Geschichte" in the Rathausscheune on the market square, which is looked after by the Carl-Brilmayer-Gesellschaft.
The exhibition uses display cases and panels to lead through the history of the place: from geological history and the Stone Age through Celtic and Roman finds, to the first mention in 766 in the Lorsch donation register and the confirmation of town rights in 1355. Reproductions of 16th-century maps and examples of local industry round off the tour.
