Brömserburg
High medieval Rhine castle in Rüdesheim, home of the Rheingau wine museum until the current renovation; presently closed.
About the museum
The Brömserburg on the Rhine waterfront in Rüdesheim is one of the oldest castles in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tree-ring dating of its timbers confirms a high medieval core, and a second building phase falls in the years 1186 to 1190. The complex, with its curtain wall, residential tower and gate tower, belonged to the Archbishops of Mainz, who granted it as a fief to the knights Brömser von Rüdesheim in the 13th century. The knights did not live in the castle, however, but in their manor in the town.
After the Brömser line died out in 1668, the castle passed to the von Metternich family; from 1811 the Counts of Ingelheim had it remodeled in the spirit of Romanticism. It was inhabited until 1937, and in 1941 the town of Rüdesheim bought the property. In the 1960s the destroyed southeast corner was reconstructed and the keep was raised to its former height.
From 1950 the castle housed the Rheingauer Weinmuseum, which used tools, vessels, ceramics and glassware to present wine culture from antiquity to modern times. It is run by an association that has cared for the historic monument for more than 70 years.
The Brömserburg is currently closed for renovation. After the work is complete, it is to tell its history in a newly designed, interactive exhibition; no reopening date has been announced. Until then, the castle garden opens on event days.
