About the museum
The Stefan-George-Museum commemorates the poet Stefan George in Bingen. George was born in 1868 in today's district of Büdesheim and died in 1933 in Minusio, Switzerland. The museum is located in the Stefan-George-Haus on the Freidhof, the former Haferkasten (oat store), a half-timbered house from 1689 owned by the city of Bingen.
The museum is run by the Stefan-George-Gesellschaft (Stefan George Society), based in Bingen. The exhibition was conceived by Dr. Jörg Müngersdorff and realized together with the Institut für Mediengestaltung in Mainz. The opening hours are maintained by volunteers from the city and the society.
Seven display cases present important stations in George's life; there is also an audio installation with poems and an automatic photo projection. On view are his writing desk, parts of his library, book designs by Melchior Lechter, foreign-language editions of his works, busts, and pictures from his parents' house, which was destroyed in the war.
