About the museum
It all began in 1980 with the opening of a small local history museum in the listed Seppensen village school of 1880. Thanks to the voluntary work of the Geschichts- und Museumsverein Buchholz und Umgebung, in cooperation with the town, this gradually grew into a museum village, which has officially carried that name since 2012 and is thus one of the youngest open-air museums in Germany.
Typical buildings of the region are grouped around the central village square: the Sniers Hus, more than 300 years old, which came from Regesbostel and was rebuilt in Seppensen in 1986; a bakehouse from Kampen, around 100 years old; a drive-through barn from Otter; a demonstration beehive set up in 2012; and a historic smithy built in 2013 with the workshop of Buchholz’s last village blacksmith. A well with a sweep and a farm garden on the west side of the Sniers Hus complete the ensemble. The buildings represent the rural architecture of the Nordheide around 1850 and were saved from demolition.
In the village school, the audiovisual exhibition “Zügig in die Zukunft – vom Heidedorf zum Bahnknotenpunkt” traces the development of the region; the school also houses a local history library. The grounds are freely accessible all year round.
