About the museum
The impetus came from the collector Niß Matthiesen, who had been gathering fire engines and other evidence of firefighting since his youth. In 1985 he proposed a fire brigade museum to the district of Harburg. After a meeting of historic fire engines, seven firefighters founded a supporting association in Dibbersen, and the first vehicles moved into a barn in Marxen, which was converted for museum use over the following years.
The museum was officially opened on 5 July 1987. As early as 1988 it also stocked the hose tower in Salzhausen. In 1989 the district decided to take over the museum; since then it has belonged to the Kiekeberg Open-Air Museum as a branch.
The museum is still run by volunteers, most of whom are themselves active in volunteer or professional fire brigades. In two halls totalling around 850 square metres, they show the development of firefighting in the district of Harburg, from fire beaters and leather buckets through horse-drawn hand-operated pressure pumps to the tanker fire engine, complemented by smaller sections on portable pumps, fire extinguishers and fire protection.
