Buckower Kleinbahn
Electric heritage railway between Müncheberg and Buckow in the Märkische Schweiz, with a small railway museum in Buckow station.
About the museum
Buckow was connected to the railway late: on July 26, 1897, a narrow-gauge light railway (750 mm gauge) just under five kilometers long opened to Dahmsdorf-Müncheberg station on the Ostbahn line. Excursion traffic from Berlin grew so much that the line was converted to standard gauge in 1929/30 and operated electrically with direct current from the outset; electric railcars ran from May 1930.
After 1950 the Deutsche Reichsbahn took over the railway, and freight traffic ended in 1965. Around 1980 the power supply was converted and the old vehicles were replaced with newly built railcars and driving trailers. After German reunification the line lost importance: electric operation ended in 1993, diesel railcars took over, and the last regular passenger train ran in September 1998.
Railway enthusiasts brought the line back. After a well-attended event day in 1999, they built a new power supply using parts of a decommissioned Berlin S-Bahn substation, and since September 14, 2002, the Verein Buckower Kleinbahn (Buckow light railway association) has once again run electric trains between Müncheberg and Buckow on summer weekends. The theft of more than one kilometer of overhead wire in 2010 forced temporary diesel operation; the overhead line was renewed in 2011. In Buckow station the association runs a small museum on the history of the line and neighboring railways, with vehicles built between 1934 and 1986 on the outdoor grounds.
