About the museum

The Bürgerhaus at Kellerstraße 19 was built in 1752. It is a typical house of a small-town craftsman's family, with two living units to the left and right of a large central hall (Diele), parlors at the front, sleeping chambers above, an open smoke kitchen, storerooms, and a cowshed; in the courtyard stand an outhouse and a pigsty. The local group of the Heimatbund Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony heritage association) bought the building to protect it from the changes in the town center.

After five years of restoration, the museum house was completed in 2007. The chosen period is around 1880, when the shoemaker family Kallmeyer lived and worked here. Besides their trade, they ran a small farm with a good six Morgen of arable and garden land, so living, work, livestock, and food storage all took place under one roof. The house was restored without modern building materials; for the work it received the 2010 Denkmalpflege Award (heritage preservation prize) of the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung.

Visitors can see the hall and courtyard, the good parlor, the shoemaker's workshop with a wallpaper from 1855, the smoke kitchen with the later-installed stove, the cellar, and the unheated chambers on the upper floor. Every spring a perennial plant market takes place in the house.
