About the museum

In the Middle Ages the Wettbergsche Adelshof stood at the town wall of Münder and served as a watch post and defense. In the 15th century it passed to the rural noble family von Wettberg, who had a Renaissance house built on the site in the last third of the 16th century. The ground floor and the vaulted cellar have largely survived; on the oriel, the family coat of arms recalls the builders. The stair tower on the west side was partly removed after 1700 in its upper third, and the upper floor was thoroughly remodeled; the gatehouse, brewhouse and cattle stables have long since disappeared.

Today the museum presents the city and regional history of Bad Münder across three floors. In the large vaults of the basement, architectural stones from different periods are on view; the ground floor holds the rooms for special exhibitions. Ten rooms on the upper floor are devoted to, among other things, salt production, a woodcarving workshop, a Biedermeier parlor, a furnished bourgeois kitchen, finds from urban excavations, the Schwiezer glass collection, and an extensive collection of regional Renaissance and Baroque ceramics.

The museums of Bad Münder are run by the town and the Gruppe Bad Münder of the Heimatbund Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony heritage association). The nearby Bürgerhaus from 1752 belongs to the same museum network.
