About the museum
The moated castle in Coppenbrügge was built around 1300 and was the seat of the Counts of Spiegelberg. After the complex was largely demolished in the 19th century, only the half-timbered house of the former district court remained of the main building. The moat and remains of the medieval defensive walls still shape the ensemble today.
In the surviving half-timbered building, the association Museum in der Burg Coppenbrügge e. V. set up a local history museum. The permanent exhibition ranges from the natural history of the Ith and Osterwald ridges through the history of the market town and its villages to recreated workshops of potters, shoemakers and linen weavers.
Particular emphasis is placed on the stay of Tsar Peter the Great in 1697, when he met Electress Sophia of Hanover in Coppenbrügge. Other focal points are the County of Spiegelberg as well as the pilgrimages to the Ith and the veneration of the so-called Spiegelberg Madonna. In addition, the association shows changing special exhibitions every year.
