The half-timbered house on Adelheidisstraße was built around 1700/1720 on the medieval rubble-stone masonry of an earlier building, of which the hearth wall, well and vaulted cellar survive. Around 1780, Leonhard Stroof (1757–1825) acquired it and remodeled and enlarged it around 1800. When Napoleon created the civil municipality of Vilich in 1808, replacing centuries of rule by the Vilich convent, Stroof became its first mayor and remained in office under Prussian administration. His home was thus the first municipal office building in what is now the Beuel district, whose administration did not move to Beuel until 1896.
After a restoration in the late 1980s, the first floor served as a museum from 1990 to 2007. When the listed building was threatened with demolition, the Denkmal- und Geschichtsverein Bonn-Rechtsrheinisch (heritage and history society) took it over and has used the house since September 2009 as a museum, meeting place, and research and education center.
The rooms reflect the period from the late Baroque to the Biedermeier era: Cologne stucco ceilings, wall paneling and stencil paintings, an open hearth and period furnishings convey the domestic and official life of the first mayor. An audio tour leads through the office, salons and other historic rooms; exhibitions, talks and guided tours round out the offering.
